Each year VNO-NCW organizes the Bilderberg Conference in Oosterbeek. At this event, over 400 guests, varying from entrepreneurs, large NGO’s, policy makers and trade movements come together to discuss relevant societal and economic topics. The theme of the 2019 conference is “Technology and innovation as solution for global societal issues”.

Bob de Wit was asked to write an essay for the book given to all guests and the network of VNO-NCW. In this article, he shares his vision on how technologies shape our society and what the consequences will be in the future. We are very pleased and honored to be a part of the Bilderberg Conference.

Prof. dr. Bob de Wit talks about 12 technologies that will disrupt our society. We can no longer analyse the future. We need to imagine the future to make a vision. What will this new world look like and what needs will customers have?

Our education system is built on the foundation of the industrial age. However, a new era has commenced. Digitalization reduces the spatial and temporal limits, which allows for anytime & anywhere education and the wide spread of learning materials, such as MOOCs. More importantly, people can continuously gain skills and knowledge that is valuable for them. New developments enable personalized education and the proactive approach of people by analyzing and matching customer needs with demand, e.g. LinkedIn Learning. What does this mean to the old-fashioned universities and how will this change the education of tomorrow?

Strategy Works has been assisting royal industry association for domestic shipping Koninklijke BLN-Schuttevaer (BLN) to shape a vision on the Inland Water Transport (IWT) sector. Through a participative approach, the project will gather input from the industry and BLN’s members, leading to a clear vision that inspires, provides direction and connects. Strategy Works, leading this project, helps BLN by organizing vision workshops with members of the industry organization, conducting interviews, assisting BLN’s staff to analyse the context and shape scenario’s, among others. In the video, an impression is giving of the vision workshops, through which expectations and emotions of players in IWT were raised, shared and gathered.

Stating that the world around us is changing at a fast pace will be stating the obvious. Yet we all tell ourselves these changes will affect others more, not so much us. After all, there will always be a need for financial professionals, right? But is this still a realistic assumption? The digital wave that we are currently experiencing will leave no industry or job unaffected. A lot of the work we are currently doing will be fully automated in the near future. It is important to understand what lies ahead and how that will influence your financial function.

Together with The Learning Cycle, Strategy Works will offer a program that teaches financials how to cope with the changing context and how to develop a strategy to be successful in the new digital era.
